THE RIGHT WORDS FOR THE RIGHT RESULTS...

“One must be drenched in words, literally soaked in them, to have the right ones form themselves into the proper pattern at the right moment.” ~Hart Crane

The first reading of your website, ad, press release, brochure or magazine may be the only chance you have to grab and hold the attention of potential customers and readers. Though the average person may not know why improper words turn them off, they grasp that something isn’t right. As a business or publication owner, you know how important that first impression is… making the difference between a sale or no sale, a loyal customer or no customer.

English is one of the most difficult languages, with origins from so many sources that much of it makes little sense. Even large companies with world-recognized advertising agencies get it wrong. For instance, Toyota’s “Everyday” campaign spread the idea that “every day” is always one word, no matter how it’s used. Not so! We go about our “everyday” business, while we use our Toyota “every day.” There is a difference. A well-designed ad for a food and wine “pairing” event ran for several weeks in a regional newspaper. However, “pairing” was spelled “paring.” It may sound the same, but the ads meaning was changed to partner wine with food “parings,” such as apple or potato skins! Don’t let these kinds of sloppy mistakes creep into your marketing efforts.
